Specialist Areas

My research interests explores the intersect between gender, sexual orientation and health. My PhD took an inter-generational approach to explore how social capital was associated to health in the gay context. I have an interest in exploring the gay experience from a late modern perspective using Beck's notion of Individualisation, Giddens concept of the Reflexive Self, and Lash's work on Reflexive Communities. My work is grounded in qualitative ethnographic principles with my key research strategies being inclusion and engagement especially in reaching hidden groups within the gay context. I am currently an active member/trustee of the Lesbian and Gay Foundation (LGF) and an organiser for two self-help support groups for gay married men.

Developing from my PhD was an ESRC funded research exploring Health Literacy using gay men as a critical case. I am now exploring the various ways by which we make sense of our health and wellbeing and am developing the idea of the Reflexive Health Citizen to locate these various approaches. My experience with diversity and equality issues has been drawn upon by the Greater Manchester Police where I was a member of the "Respect Board" charged with developing their diversity programmes. This interest has continued when invited to workshops organised by the Office of National Statistics exploring how gender and sexual orientation can be included in surveys they conduct.
