Health, Rehabilitation and Psychology Research Centre

Centre co-ordinator: Dr Julie Marshall
Deputy co-ordinator: Dr Juliet Goldbart

The members of HRP are engaged in wide-ranging inter- and multi-disciplinary research in the fields of health services, disability and rehabilitation, learning disability and applied behavioural science.

Research interests include aspects of physical and mental health, cognition and language, learning disability, musculo-skeletal conditions, neuromotor conditions, cognitive neuroscience, cognitive psychology and the provision and evaluation of health services.

HRP staff are engaged in collaborative research with local, regional, national and international communities and professional groups. Local and regional partnerships and collaborators include speech and language therapy departments, SureStart projects, Primary Care Trusts, hospitals, schools, LEAs, Manchester Education Partnership, Manchester Learning Disability Partnership (with whom the University has established a joint professorial post), regional research groups (for practitioners and university staff) and staff at other universities (including Sheffield, Birmingham, Liverpool John Moores and Liverpool). HRP members work closely with local professionals/practitioners as well as with other researchers. As an example, speech and language therapy staff hold honorary or secondment contracts and locally employed practitioners and clients contribute to research and teaching in MMU.

National groups and international collaborators and professional organisations include the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and the National Physiotherapy Research Network, Newcastle University, the University of the West of England, Sports Governing Bodies and national agencies, the National Patient Safety Agency, the UK Research in Imagery and Observation group (which is based in MMU), the University of Orono, in Maine, USA, IASSID (Europe’s round table on profound disability), the International Society for Alternative & Augmentative Communication and the Indian Institute for Cerebral Palsy.

HRP members work within a range of disciplines and professional backgrounds, including Allied Health Professions (e.g. dietetics, physiotherapy, podiatry and speech and language therapy), law, nursing, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and exercise and sport sciences. Most HRP members are based either in the Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care at MMU or at MMU Cheshire, with a small number based outside MMU, for example in the Manchester Learning Disability Partnership and in the NHS, for example as honorary researchers based in Manchester hospitals.

Researchers in this centre welcome discussion of research ideas, with practitioners and staff from MMU and other universities, particularly for collaborative local, regional, national or international projects.

There are four main research groups in the HRP Centre, each with associated strands and individual project areas. Individuals may belong to one or more group.

The HRP Centre hosts a thriving research seminar programme. For further information please contact Marilyn Barnett.
